Costuming, Stuff I Do

Midwinter Masque Part 3: Fabric Shopping

We are absolutely blessed in Minneapolis to have a very small chain of discount fabric stores. You may never know what SR Harris will be stocking at any particular time, but if what you need isn’t exactly something you can buy off-the-shelf at Jo-Ann Fabrics, it’s likely you can buy it there.

It took us two hours at SR, and another hour at Jo-Ann’s, but we did indeed find what we were looking for. We came away with:

  • Grey brocade (and lining) for Shoryl’s waistcoat
  • Purple and black crepe for Shoryl’s cape
  • Tuquoise crepe (and lining) for my houppelande
  • Orange woven poly (and lining) for my underdress
  • Assorted beads, buttons, and notions

I now had a corset pattern in hand and most of the needed fabric. I could finally start to sew.

My bird mask with underdress (orange) and houppe (turquoise) fabric, as well as a pre-beaded trim to get worked into a belt

There’s more shopping to do, but that will come later, when I have pictures of it all.
